Behrouz Haghgouyan wins MSEN Best Paper Award

Posted on July 30, 2019 by behrouz

Behrouz Haghgouyan won the Best Graduate Student Paper Competition in 2019 Materials Science and Engineering Awards.  Behrouz’s paper is titled “Fracture Toughness of NiTi – Towards Establishing Standard Test Methods for Phase Transforming Materials“, and was published in Acta Materialia in 2019.  In this paper, a methodology is developed to measure the fracture toughness of SMAs that can be applied to other phase transforming materials. Because of the inherent complexities in constitutive response of SMAs, investigating their fracture behavior is challenging, and the methodology proposed in this paper offers a solution for challenges in proper assessment of their fracture properties. The comprehensive set of experiments that was carried out in this work, resulted in unprecedented results regarding temperature dependence of fracture in SMAs.

Lei Xu wins best paper award at AIAA conference

Posted on January 22, 2019 by behrouz

Lei Xu won the Lockheed Martin Best Student Paper Competition Award at the 2019 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Science and Technology Forum and Exposition (AIAA SciTech) held Jan. 7-11 in San Diego, California. Lei’s technical paper is titled “A Three-Dimensional Constitutive Model for Shape Memory Alloys Considering Two-Way Shape Memory Effect and Transformation-Induced Plasticity”.  The proposed computational model in his technical paper will be ultimately utilized as an efficient tool for the design and analysis of SMA-based actuators, such as SMA beams and torque tubes, which are intended for the realization of the future commercial supersonic transport aircraft with morphing capabilities to reduce the sonic boom noise. This work is funded by NASA under the University Initiative Leadership program.
